This past weekend was a snowy one, but we had a blast at camp!

The 83 senior high youth and sponsors took full advantage of the tube run, and even made up some of their own snow games.

Another Scrapbooking Retreat has come and gone!

These retreats are always filled with fun, laughter and a lot of cropping.
We had nine new faces scattered among the familiar.
The ladies enjoyed reconnecting with old friends, making new friends, laughing, late night pizza on Saturday, and wonderful mochas.

I am always amazed by the eagerness these women come with. They make sure they arrive not a moment too late and make the most of every minute of the retreat.

Celebrate Amigo was, once again, a fun-filled weekend. Though it was chilly and a bit damp, guests enjoyed all that camp had to offer. Here are a few highlights from the weekend:

Celebrating 40 years of Outdoor Environmental Education - Cheryl with 3 teachers who were instrumental in beginning the program, Verlyn Nofziger, Dale Stutzman and Dan Hochstetler.

Nina Lanctot shares her experiences as a pastor is St. Joe county, as well as her involvement in St. Joe week last summer.

40 Years of O/EE

Fall Outdoor Environmental Education season has come and gone, but it left us with many memories. Some weeks were terribly cold and rainy, some weeks were unseasonably warm. Some groups were rather large, some groups were small and mighty. Some night hikes were as dark as could be, some night hikes were illuminated by a full moon.

As we celebrated the 40th year for O/EE, we were reminded of the power of outdoor education. Students were able to experience learning in a whole new, meaningful way.

We're thankful for the break, but we can't wait for the Spring to bring in more wonderful groups!

Validating summer.

Summer.

I can't really believe that it's over, even though I'm feeling the effects of long days, hot weather and a noisy camp. It was a great one, though. The summer staff was energetic and ever-positive, especially as they faced obstacles and challenges. We had some wonderful campers grace us with their presence over the past few months. We were blessed with camp pastors who shared how big God has been in their own lives, and also how to let God do some big things in each of our lives. Summer staff added a lot to worship services as well with humorous dramas and energetic music.

Now that things are quieting down, I've been taking some moments to reflect over it all. I certainly enjoyed watching the weeks unfold after spending time gathering resources and making plans. I've put together a short video clip showing just a few of the many fun, exciting and new things that went on at Amigo this summer. Take a look!

2011 Golf Scramble

A few pictures and thoughts from our annual Golf Scramble. The scramble raise money to support camp scholarships for St Joe County, Michigan. Each year we provide 90 scholarships for local kids to come to camp. We work with DHS to find families and kids that can use a week of camp. This year we had about 100 golfers come out for a fun day on the links. There was much laughter and fellowship as well as some good competitive golf. The team of Rick McKibben, Rod Lung, Jeff Moore and Chris Immell won the "A Flight" with a score of 55. With a 56 and 2 57's also posted, we had some very good rounds. Thanks for all that came out for the day.

Jonathan has been teaching a Road Scholar (previously Elderhostel) program at Amigo Centre for the past number of years, at least 7 or 8 times. His passion for plants and the Lewis and Clark Trail is inspiring. When I first came to Amigo, I wondered why we hosted a Road Scholar program on the Lewis and Clark Trail since we are no where close to it. After meeting Jonathan and listening to his stories, I felt transported to the trail. I am linking his website here for those that are interested in gardening or Lewis and Clark. He also has a book that he hopes to be published this fall.

Scrapbook Retreat Feedback

This past scrapbook retreat was our biggest, yet. 57 participants came to scrapbook, fellowship, and recharge their batteries. The gym was bursting with activity and creativity all hours of the day and night. Here are a few comments from the what participants found most meaningful:

Peace

Being able to have lots of room to scrapbook with all my friends. A nice place to rest, and meals provided. The staff is always so warm, welcoming and helpful! Thank you so much!!!

I loved the whole weekend. I can't wait to do it again.

The cropping space is great. So much room to spread out, with good lighting and good heating/cooling. The snacks were great too.

Time to scrapbook and time to enjoy nature and friends.

found that the ability to be with people that you love and cherish was very important. It gave me the chance to spend time with my family in something that we all love to do.

The time and space to work, walk the trails, and catch up with friends.

I saw the following blurb in the "Thursday Mail", a weekly update from Christian Camps and Conference Association, CCCA. I agree and wanted to pass it on. It is important to keep educating and developing whole people.

According to a March 15 report on Stltoday.com (the Web site of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch), the friendships, new experiences and character-building activities develop emotional intelligence, a factor that is a more important indicator of adult happiness and success than IQ scores. Camp gives young people the opportunity to learn about themselves, develop confidence, discover strengths and meet challenges in an environment of loving guidance where academics aren’t the focus. Research shows that skills such as listening, cooperation, empathy, sharing and self-control — all emphasized at camp — are key to kids’ school success and healthy relationships, and later, positive contributions to their community and fulfilling careers.

Amigo Centre Announces new Executive Director

After a six month search process Amigo Centre announced the hiring of Cliff Brubaker as their new Executive Director at their annual Friends of Amigo banquet. Over the past 25 years Cliff has served in ministry roles within multiple congregations, most recently specializing in transitional ministry. He has studied at Associated Biblical Seminary and is a graduate of Eastern Mennonite College and Bethany Christian Schools.

"The board and staff of Amigo are very happy to welcome Cliff as Executive Director. His passion for Amigo and it's ministry are apparent and we believe he is uniquely equiped to serve Amigo at this particular point in time." (David Gautsche, Board Chair)

Amigo Centre is located in Sturgis, Michigan and is a ministry of the Indiana-Michigan Conference of Mennonite Church USA.

Farewells and the changing of the seasons

this is a week of farewells at Amigo, On Monday, we said good bye to Robin Culver, who after 10 years of cooking meals for camp is off to travel and explore the world. On Friday, we say good bye to Ben Semple who has been a part of the Amigo community for almost a year as a volunteer. These farewells along with saying good bye to Kent Miller in December have made us more aware of transition and change in life.

It seems appropriate that while the days get longer and the snow melts, we start looking for green shoots and buds on trees. Seasons come and go, providing a rhythm to life, so it seems that we leave one season of staff and look with anticipation to the next one. With new leadership and energy, we will continue to provide a place for people to gather and learn more about themselves, each other and creation.

Trinity Winter Outdoor Education!

We had an amazing time with the 5^th grade class from Trinity Lutheran School that came for Outdoor Education last week! It was a real pleasure and blessing to spend some time in the outdoors with such a positive and respectful bunch of kids. The snow and cold weather did not stop them from an amazing three days filled with laughter, excitement, and learning. They learned so much and had a blast in their classes, which included cross-country skiing, orienteering, Co-op, winter survival, creative writing, and many more. I think it is safe to say that the Trinity staff, Amigo staff, and the students all had a very memorable experience at camp!

Thanks again, Trinity 5th graders and staff. We had a great time and we can't wait to see you all again soon!

That is why you might have noticed some changing of the background or of the font. This is the time of year where I can prepare for next year and part of that is finding ways to stay connected. Just so you know that I am not staying in at my computer all of the time and am taking opportunities to pay attention to the beauty of creation. A picture:

The power of space

Taking time to create a positive space is worth the effort. Yesterday I was in the Clinton Frame youth area where John (our Feb. 25-27 speaker) and Sheila Troyer have worked to shape the place and make it a great place for youth. Later in the day, we finished our Christmas decorations moving some furniture to make space for the tree. Now I set in my favorite chair and face a different direction, a whole new world opens up. Space shapes our experience, how often do we take time to shape the space?

Over the past two summers we have cleaned, painted, and spruced up the chapel and the arts and crafts building as part of the Art Camp. Summer staff designed the spaces and then made it happen. The power of the process was evident as creativity was unleashed and community was built. Amazing what some paint, hard work and some freedom can do. Take some time this season to care for your space, remove some clutter and change your view.

Quilting and Scrapbooking in December

Creativity ran wild this past weekend at Amigo! We were so excited to have about 45 ladies join us for the last Scrapbook Retreat of the year and the 2010 Quilting Retreat. As snow began to cover the ground outside, the scrapbookers set up shop in the Activity Center while a group of quilters worked on their projects in the Dining hall basement. Often used as a time to personally reflect, slowdown, and connect with others, these two weekend retreats have become a really special time for all who are involved. We look forward to next year as we gear up for four more scrapbooking weekends, as well as the 2011 Quilting Retreat!

Snow! let the winter retreats begin! This weekend we have quilters and scrapbookers, should be good weekend to stay inside and work on projects. Some time to prepare for the busy-ness of the holidays.

We do want to encourage you to slow down, enjoy the moments of this season. I know that I can spend a lot of energy worrying about all of the different obligations I have. Work, family, school programs, etc. And I forget that we are giving Gifts and that to be a Gift it needs to be freely given, not given out of obligation or because I want one in return.

Pay attention to each moment, appreciate the people in your life for who they are not who you wish they were, focus on the good things and notice how God is present. Those are my thoughts and goals for this season. What are your's?

A couple of updates: First we welcome Cliff Brubaker as our interim Executive Director. Kent is wrapping up here over the next couple of weeks and transitioning to Cliff. I will do some more introducing of Cliff later and actually hope to have him do some writing for the blog as well. The basics are that Cliff does transitional ministry work and did a couple months of interim work here between Dana Sommers and Kent five years ago.

This spring, Richard Paff came through on his 48 state hoop challenge (to make a basketball hoop in the 48 states as fast as possible. He is on the left in the blue sweatshirt. They attempted this to raise money for a school in Guatemala, they met the goal of $26,000 and construction has started. One cool creation

For those that were at Celebrate, this probably looks familiar. It is one of Ross' creations. Ross has this gift of taking odds and ends, junk really. And making them into something beautiful. Bird feeders, squirrel playhouses and now fountains.

This picture led me to think about how God takes us and turns us to to useful and beautiful beings. We are all aware of our short comings and how we don't measure up to others, but God sees something different. As we enter into the advent season, may you find grace and peace as we wait for what is next.

61 riders plus a beautiful weekend in September, some great country roads, a pretty decent camp, and some awesome planners (Claude and Margaret Schrock and Jim and Beckie Larimer) raised more than $17,000 for MCC. Wow!

The beauty of the lake at sunrise. The bonds built at camp are not easily broken.

John Troyer

John Troyer is a youth pastor from Clinton Frame Mennonite Church and is married to Sheila Troyer and has two children, Mandy and Michael. Last year they both spoke at different retreats, this year they are combining forces to lead our January retreat. Both are students at AMBS. Here is a look forward to the topic for weekend. Very excited to have them at camp again.

Life is full of tough choices and difficult situations. So how are we preparing ourselves to face these challenges? Do we simply go along with what the culture suggests or do we look to our relationship with God? An artist sketches before a masterpiece, an athlete practices before the big game, a mechanic tinkers before the major overhaul. Each person prepares for the challenges that they will face. How are we preparing? What are the practices that shape who we are and who we will become? What are the ways that we can be transformed into the fullness of whom God created us to be? How are we forming ourselves into a people of faith in order to prepare for the challenges ahead? These are some of the questions we will explore this weekend as we spend time growing through faith, fellowship, and fun.

Introducing Ben and Sarah speakers for the January 14-16 Junior High Winter Youth Retreat. You might recognize them from the Friday night session of KNOW JESUS! I am very excited to have them for the whole weekend!

Ben and Sarah Schlegel are co-youth pastors at Howard-Miami Mennonite Church, which is 3 miles east and one mile south of Wawpecong, IN. Or just outside of Kokomo, if you know where that is. They are the parents of a brand new baby boy, Jeremiah. Besides working at the church, Sarah enjoys reading, couponing, playing games, and watching football. Ben is a part-time seminary student and also enjoys gardening, cooking, watching football (Go Huskers!), and playing games that most of his friends have never heard of (anyone up for Settlers of Catan?).

Pastors and leaders from Indiana and Michigan gathered at Amigo for a weekend of instruction, worship and some fellowship. Our speaker was Marion Bontrager from Hesston College. His topic was "Heilsgeschichte" or the salvation story. He led the participants through the whole bible. Very informative, very challenging and very inspiring. There was also time for church teams to meet or to walk the trails enjoying nature. For me, the highlight was our own sharing of stories at the "open mic" time after the Saturday sessions. Some funny stories were shared along with a couple of beautiful songs. It was time well spent together. Thanks for all who attended.

Words From Ben: See ya later, Fall!

The sight of the fist snow flakes falling on Friday made it clear to me that whether I like it or not, winter is coming. Fall here at Amigo really possesses a life of its own, and I am really going to miss it. I made memories this fall at Amigo that will stick with me for a long time, and resurface year after year once I see the gold and orange in the trees.

One of those memories will include the times I made my way back into the woods to check out this particular Red Maple. This young tree seemed to hold on to its outrageously colorful leaves longer then normal. I remember standing in front of it and noticing that everything around it had already shut down for winter, looking gray and "blah." It dawned on me that this tree was the only colorful thing in this section of the woods. The gorgeous orange and red leaves would almost shine in the midst of all the dead fallen leaves and empty trees. Naturally, my mind wandered to how this related to what Jesus is in our lives, and naturally, the beauty of Gods creation struck again.

An Idea!

Fellowship around the dining hall table, this week we, also, had a small family reunion here at Amigo 3 sisters and a brother with their spouses gathered to reconnect and spend some time together. As they were walking around camp, it sounded like they were planning a larger family reunion here. I thought that sounded like a great idea: to plan the reunion while at camp, you know, come spend some time checking things out and preparing for a future event. It turns out they were just hear to enjoy each other, but I still think it is a good idea.

The ministry that Amigo provides to families is often overlooked. Gathering a family is often very stressful with a variety of different dynamics all at play. The listening and support that Marcy and Faith provide is a great gift. Good food and good places to congregate help to reduce the tensions and let families enjoy being together. Take advantage of our experiences to help guide and support your time here at Amigo. There is room for all kinds of family traditions and activities. Enjoy.

This week we hosted a group from the Mennonite Publishing Network for a couple of days of meetings. They summed up there time with this note to us:

"We had a great time meeting at Amigo Centre during the last few days. Most of the participants had not been to Amigo before and were very pleased with the location! Special mention was made about the beautiful lake, particularly as it was covered by the morning mist."

We love having groups use the facilities and enjoy the place.

The women's retreat hosted by In Mi Mennonite Women was a very meaningful retreat. The topic was grief and while not easy to think about, Shannon Dycus, led the women to work through grief and come out as stronger women. We had a beautiful weekend and many activities were outside. I am working a model to make sense of what we do at camp. How does connecting youth to the Outdoor Ed curriculum bring them closer to God? How does a pastor's retreat draw participants to nature? How does renewing Family bonds bring one closer to God?

When you grow deeper in a relationship whether to the environment, to people, or with God, you also gain new insights into the other areas. They reinforce each other and inspire us to live deeper and more aware.

Example 1: When I teach about the Marsh and how different ecosystems work together to keep balance and harmony in creation, I am amazed and awed by the God who created it all. It, also, encourages me to see how people work together to create beauty in communities.

Example 2: As I learn more about how my food gets to my table, I realize how my community, my neighbors are affected by my choices. My desire to follow God demands that I also love my neighbors even when it is not easy.

I realize that it is a circle that never ends, once we join it we continue to go deeper and deeper in the cycle. The more we learn the more we realize we don't know. I am glad that God is full of grace and invites us all to join where we are at. Jesus call us to follow him. We want camp to be that place that calls and nurtures disciples.

The essence of program?

One of the questions I have been wrestling with is what exactly is the essence of program, programming here at Amigo, for other camps, for the Mennonite Church. How and what is the focus of what we are doing? and then what is successful? Is having a small camp that deeply impacts a few people as valuable as one that impacts hundreds?

I trying to boil things down, like boiling maple sap to get maple sugar, to try and figure out what it is that we have to offer. I don't want to be just another should for people, like we should go on retreat or we should send our kids to camp. I don't want to be a cheap luxury, something that the church doesn't really need. We shouldn't try to duplicate what is done in the home congregations, the colleges, the seminaries, and by conventions. We offer a unique setting to call people away from their permanent communities to form a temporary one, to try new things and to be refreshed by encountering God.

Blog Post: "Words from Ben" – Celebrate Amigo

I had such a blast at Celebrate Amigo this weekend! First off, it was awesome to spend time with some summer staffers that came up to enjoy the weekend. I look forward to maybe seeing them again this winter and sharing more stories and memories from the summer. I also had the privilege of helping to set up the Amazing Race: Amigo Style. It was a fun activity that had the participants running around camp with big smiles on their face. Faith had the racers drawing in pudding, Robin got people hard at work with some donut decorating and Cheryl and Bob kept a cozy campfire going down by the lake. I was very happy with how the race turned out and had such a great time getting it all together. One of the many highlight of the weekend was the benefit auction on Sat. night. What a rush! It was so exciting to see all the generous donations to this special place, and the auctioneer had the crowd rolling in laughter.

All in all it seemed to be a very successful weekend. I really enjoyed being a part of it because it reminded me of how amazing a place like Amigo is. Also, with the help of Ross's profound words in his sermon on Sunday morning, I was reminded that the work of God is astonishing, and for me, Amigo has become a spot where I am reminded of that.

The weather is looking great and there looks like a lot of folks are coming for the weekend. We walked through the Amazing Race as a staff today and there was a lot of laughter. It should be a lot of fun. Ben did a great job coming up with clues. A couple highlights will be crafts with Faith and a special challenge there and cooking with Cheryl over the campfire. Waving goodbye to the last group of Outdoor Ed students of the fall was defiantly a bittersweet moment. It was a wonderful fall OE/E season and getting a chance to work with about seven different school groups was such a blessing. One thing that stuck out to me over the past month was the importance to putting my self in the camper's shoes, and realizing how excited and thrilled they are to be away at outdoor school. The fifteen hour days and four straight hours on the co-op course was not always my favorite thing to do, but once you see the wide-eyed face of an excited student, you quickly realize that you are not doing these things for your enjoyment; you are doing it for them.

This summer Kent connected with Craig Wallin and came up with a way to feature Amigo on Craig's FreshTV show. It was fun to watch the shooting and Kent does a great job describing Amigo. Check it out and share it. Amigo is somewhat of a "hidden treasure" but one that we like to share with others. It takes effort to retreat, to stop the momentum of life in order to reconnect with its meaning. The effort also enhances the meaning. Pass on the word and help folks to slow down and connect with God, creation and each other

Camp Store Moves Inside

After a long journey around camp, the store has moved back into the retreat center. Now we will keep the trading post for summer camp and outdoor education out in the pavilion but for other guests it will be much handier. It required work and sacrifice by many on staff. Sheila has moved her office downstairs with help from Kent, Ross, Bob and JB. Faith and Marcy worked hard to clean and organize the space. I am very impressed by it.

Over the past few months, I have wondered about having a store and selling things when folks are on retreat, stepping away from the consumer culture that leads us to want more and more stuff. Stuff that doesn't satisfy like relationships with each other and mostly with God. However, the way that Faith set up the space is inviting, not to buy stuff, but creates a relaxing atmosphere to the lobby. At least in my humble opinion, check it out for yourself and let me know what you think.

I am so excited to be back! After being part of an amazing summer camp program, I could not be more thrilled to be back at Amigo for a six month term of voluntary service. My transition back to camp has been awesome so far, and even though I still have some unpacking to do, I am already feeling at home. That is all possible due to how blessed I am to have the support of family and friends back in Maryland, as well as those right here in the Amigo Community. I have already seen God work in me and through me over the past few weeks and I can not wait to see what will happen over the next few months!

Road Scholars!

Last week we had our Road Scholar program, formerly Elderhostel, here to learn about the Amish and about Lewis and Clark. Two great programs for lifelong learners. Tim Lichti and Jonathan Hoffman were our teachers for the week. The above puzzle was put together during their free time. These groups continue to amaze me, all of the curiosity and desire to understand new things is inspiring. Thanks to Stan and Mary Grove for hosting the weekend and taking such good care of the Scholars, 20 folks from Michigan, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio and California.

This fall we have several programs coming up. Scrapbooking is this weekend, our biggest yet with 45 participants they will be doing there scrapbook thing in the gym. It is great to see that space utilized in different ways. Then we have a Transitional Ministers training October 4-6, the Indiana Michigan Mennonite Women Fall Retreat, and Celebrate Amigo all coming up in the next three weeks. There is still room for each event. Check out www.amigocentre.org for more information and registration for each event.

Also, looking ahead we have the Pastoral Leadership Team retreat, a quilt retreat and another scrapbook retreat. Plus we have 7 schools doing the OEE thing and several churches having a fall retreat. What a great time to get together, thanks for coming to Amigo. Look forward to seeing you around.

Preparing to Scrapbook...a spiritual Discipline

I was looking for a prayer for the upcoming scrapbook retreat and found this great little video talking about prayer. Esther Prabakar talks about combining the popular hobby of scrapbooking with prayer. I have noticed the importance these retreats take in the rhythms of life. Yes, there is a lot of laughter and fun, late nights and lots of snacks, but it is also a weekend of remembering your love ones and of praying for them in a variety of ways. I like when Esther talks about abiding with God and compares it with her little dog that is always ready to set with her.

Welcome to Ben Semple! He has joined the Amigo staff for six months of voluntary service. He will be working primarily with program by teaching outdoor education classes and helping with the winter youth retreats. Ben was on summer staff this past summer and brought a great dose of enthusiasm and leadership to the programs. We are looking forward to having him on staff as we learn from each other.

Well Labor Day has passed and the schools in Michigan have started back to school. I know that those in Indiana have been back for a couple of weeks already. I have enjoyed the month of August in spending time with my family after a great summer of camps. All of that to say that camp enters a different rhythm now, one where I will have more time to post pictures from the summer and stories from camp. This past weekend was a great event at Goshen College. For the past 18 years, Camp Friedenswald and Amigo Centre have hosted Know Jesus: a middle school event. It is a lot of fun to spend time with middle schoolers, their energy is amazing. The hanging out, the playing games are a lot of fun. But more so their desire to learn, to worship, to take following Jesus serious. It was a great example of church now, not the church of the future but of the present. I will be posting some pictures over the next couple of days, along with some pictures from the summer.

What a summer!

I can't really believe that we just said good bye to most of the summer staff and are done with overnight camps. We still have two weeks of Day Camp and the Know Jesus, junior high event at Goshen College this summer, plus a band camp, a football camp, and several other groups using the facilities in August. But the traditional Camp Amigo summer experience is winding down, and since I haven't blogged in a while here are a few reflections from the summer, with more to come.

The staff worked very hard to make each week special for each camper. We cooked many meals over campfires and many cabins spent a night in tents. Capture the Flag and carnivals were some of the big all camp events.

With the warm weather, we tried to swim as much as possible and used the pontoon boats as transportation to and from the swim area. We also worked to incorporate some more choice and time to just have fun at camp through Free Time Zones. Kids could choose to play rec games or do more boating or create things in the craft shack. It was fun to watch the kids play and experience camp for themselves.

Humbled and Awed by God

Some pictures from one of our canoe trips in June with the group of women from Reba Place Church. To sum it up briefly, the group was humbled and awed by God's grace and provision throughout the canoe trip. Cheryl will be doing four more trips this summer to the Boundary Waters.

Campers and guests have enjoyed the pontoons as the main mode of transportation over to the swim area this summer. Even when things didn't go smoothly, spirits stayed high. I know that sometimes I got frustrated if things weren't running quite right, but it only took me looking up and realizing that I was on a very beautiful lake enjoying a summer day. It doesn't get much better than that, does it?

Abbott brought about 40 people to camp for a morning of team building. They came up with an "Amazing Race" where they canoed, communicated, shot arrows and baskets, fished, and had a great time on our grounds. It was a lot of fun to watch the groups work together and enjoy the outdoors at the same time.

I have been a little off on posting blogs. Spring OEE is winding down after a very good spring. We had rain for many groups but it was amazing how much of it held off and allowed the students to experience creation. The staff led by Cheryl Mast brought energy, creativity, and care to their interactions with the teachers and the students. Jessica Andrews, Rose Byler, Trevor Penn, Ben Semple, along with Kent Miller and Bob Hochstedler taught classes.

Stan and Mary Grove hosted our Exploritas program this spring while John Sharp resourced it. As a side piece of information, Exploritas used to be Elderhostel but due to a trademark infringement with the new name, they are now going by "Road Scholar". They have been using that name for a type of program they offer for a while now. So look for Road Scholar catalogs and website. They offer programs throughout the country, programs geared towards senior adults. Programs for lifelong learners.

The leadership staff have now arrived and are getting camp all geared up for the summer. I am very excited to see what all they come up with as they prepare for the campers. Addie Leaman is our summer director for a second summer.

On a personal note, the last month as been very exciting and tiring at the same time. Lori and I welcomed John Floyd into our family.

An OEE group is getting prepared to learn and have fun. I am reminded again and again at how great this experience is for the kids and how much work their teachers go to to pull it off. In a lot of ways it is a rite of passage for them. A marker that they will remember into adult hood. Our job as Amigo staff is to provide a learning experience and a place for kids to grow. It takes time and energy invested by the school staff, volunteers and camp staff, but is there really a better thing to invest in than our kids. Thanks!

Value of Outdoor Education

A few reflections on outdoor education this morning. I came to Camp Amigo with Shipshewana Scott Elementary along time ago, it was the second group that came from Shipshe-I remember being bummed because before that the sixth grade class always went to Chicago, we sold Chicken Barbecue as a fundraiser. Now I remember things I learned that trip, things about canoeing, bees, orienteering, that I have no business remembering. Of all the facts that we have thrown at us as students, the things I remember most are the things of doing.

It is easy for me now to get stuck in the Amigo way of doing things so this week when I went to pick up my kids from school and the fourth graders just got back from an outdoor overnight experience, I got to see the other side of it. The tired kids and parents and teachers looking like they just had an experience. I got to hear some of the stories and know that it wasn't all fun and games, but they were experiences that they will remember and talk about for a long time. The real investment is the time and energy that goes into pulling it off, it takes a community effort to pull it off. (they did go to another camp, in a couple of weeks the 3rd graders come to Amigo for the day, then I will get to experience being a parent of a student at Amigo)

Then I hear constantly about schools not meeting standards and having to make budget cuts and I know there are lots of hard decisions to be made. I also know the excitement, the need for experiential education and the community building that happens on these trips. Which brings me back to the picture I posted, the leaves which at once were very beautiful now nourish the flower which is blooming. The natural cycle of life and I wonder what the next stages of education and camp will look like. I am hopeful and excited about the opportunities but it will take faith and time to see things through.

Transitional Minister Training

So I am still trying to get the hang of this reporting and taking pictures thing. The Transtional Minister Training was wrapping up and I realized I hadn't taken any pictures yet, so I ran downstairs and snapped this one on my camera phone. Admittedly it is not the best, but it captures the essence of what I saw this week.

Cliff Brubaker and Gary Martin have designed a program to train persons in Transitional Ministry. Dan Miller was heavily involved in the process as well. It is a two event training time held in the fall and spring with coaching and mentoring involved in between. We just completed the first round and plan to go again this next year in October.

The great thing I saw was the networking and support between the teachers and the students. To see these folks who often walk with churches in the worst of times or through the heaviest of issues finding connections was very meaningful. The picture shows Cliff and Gary engaged in depth conversation with Frank Kandel and Lois Kauffman, engaged in carrying their passion for the church onward.

Woodcutting...or at least the results

This past Saturday with the help of about 18 volunteers, we were able to get a great head start on filling the woodshed for next winter. For those of you that don't know, we are able to heat the Retreat Center, Activity Center and Dining Hall primarily with wood from our forests. Through forest management with Bill Minter, we can keep the forest alive and well and provide a big chunk of energy. Thanks to all that came out to help.

It is not everyday you get to be part of a world record attempt, but yesterday we did. Richard Paff along with two friends are attempting to set the fastest time of driving around the 48 continous states and making a basketball hoop in each one. They are doing this to raise funds for New Dawning Christian School in San Juan la Langua, Guatemala.

Richard is the father of Brian Paff who works at Laurelville Mennonite Church Center in Mount Pleasant, PA, hence the connection to Amigo. Brian was actually able to surprise his dad at Amigo.

Their joy and friendship were evident as soon as they got out of the car. They even took the time to pose with Lori in the picture above. Hard to tell which is expecting...

Thanks to volunters, another room was painted with new wall hangings and comforters. It has been encouraging to see how people come to camp to volunteer time painting and cleaning and much more. The time and energy they invest not to mention the dollars is inspiring. And they do it quietly without fanfare or expectations of reward. So to the many volunteers who have spent time here, a very humble thank you. We know that we are lucky to serve at such an important place to so many people.

More Improvements!

The downstairs bathroom of the dining hall has been remodeled. There has always been a definite feel and look in the dining hall basement bathrooms. It always brought me back to church basements from my youth, smells do that don't they. Well over the past month Ross, JB and Bob have worked to remodel and freshen up the bathrooms, come and check them out.

Looking forward to spring...and summer

Here are a few things we are looking forward to this spring:

Spring OEE season starts April 15 with Triton followed by Chandler, Benton, Parkside, Waterford, Westview, Millersburg, Centreville, Wakarusa, Riverview, Middlebury, and still some more firming up dates.
Even more than the schools coming, our program continues to develop as Cheryl Mast works very hard to keep current and improving education opportunities. With Jess Andrews helping and some summer staff coming early, our instructors will do a great job providing unique experiences for the students.
We have a transitional ministers training, a mother daughter crop and an Exploritas (formerly Elderhostel) session coming this spring as well.
With Addie Leaman returning to lead summer camp, I am excited as we continue to focus on making the week a special time for the campers.
I have been blown away by the quality of the applicants I have gotten this year, which has forced me to turn away some very good people.
And Day Camp is coming back, Sara McDonald will be leading it as we continue to develop this program in serving youth in the area.
And on a personal note, the Lichti family is anticipating a third child any day.

With getting ready for summer and thinking about all the things that will go on here, like Outdoor Ed with over 12 groups coming this spring, summer camp, day camp, family reunions, one of the most popular is camping at Amigo Park. It is a place set aside where connections are made and renewed each year. There have been families camping in tents and RVs for over 30 years. Fishing, playing volleyball, riding bikes, swimming, hanging out around the campfire, sharing stories, laughing and comforting.

We are getting ready for summer camp. We are processing registrations for the campers and applications for the summer staff, and I am excited about both. A few things to look forward to this year:

Studying the Sermon on the Mount and finding ways to incorporate the Lord's Prayer throughout the day.
Using pontoons to transport campers to the swim area and spending more time swimming.
Quality staff who love working with kids, being outside, and following Jesus in community
Survivor camps, Horse camps, Sports and Art Camp
New ways to stay connected after camp and even during camp for parents

What we do, friendship and mentoring...

One of my favorite dynamics of camp is the friendship and mentoring that happen between counselors and campers. Young people pointing the way for younger people, taking time to guide and give once in a life time kinds of experiences. Here are a few pictures of the counselor/camper experience. I wonder who learns more the counselor or the camper? I think I probably learned more for my campers than I ever could have taught them.

Mennonite Camping and Curling

Each year, we gather with other Mennonite Camps to share ideas, struggles, and our journeys. In the odd numbered years we meet with our region, last year we met at Swan Lake in South Dakota. The even numbered years, we meet with camps from across Canada and the US. Last week, we gathered at Hidden Acres in Ontario, Canada. We worshiped, networked, laughed, prayed, and more together. We described ourselves as family and worked to build bridges towards each other.

It was a time filled with refreshment as we connected with 60+ people involved in camping in like 15 different camps. We tried curling which might just need its own blog post, what fun we had on the pebble trying to get stones in the house. Amigo had 9 people attend to get ideas, share in concerns, and get ready for the coming months. Each of us came away with new energy for camping, for sharing, for following Jesus.

Why Scrapbook at Amigo

I asked the question on our evaluations: What did you find meaningful this weekend? Below I listed some of the responses to share some of why people keep coming and what they find when they are here.

Focused Time! Beautiful surroundings. Very helpful, welcoming, accommodating staff. Fellowship with friends
Spending time with friends and family, recording memories and making new ones
I love scrapping in a quiet, friendly, Christian environment. It was nice to stay in such nice facilities and get to know new people and see their scrapping methods
Lots of space for work, lots of friends for laughs and lots of food to eat
Learning from others and their different styles. Listening to their stories
The fellowship and the friendship (helpfulness) of all the staff. It really helped to have the wooden chairs and GREAT idea for waste baskets. Also, liked the wheeled dollies available
Freedom from cooking
The ability to go for walks on the trails, relaxing, doing something fun that I enjoy doing (scrapbooking)
The caring and nurturing environment is encouraging. The scrapbooking time with friends is productive and fun. Nature inspires me
Time to think about what a wonderful life God has given me!
